Bollwood Dance - the evolution

The evolution of Indian dance into Bollywood is a fascinating journey that reflects cultural amalgamation and global influences.
Initially, Bollywood dance drew heavily from classical Indian dance forms such as Kathak, Bharatanatyam, and Manipuri, which were integral to storytelling in early Indian cinema.
Folk dances like Bhangra and Garba also played a significant role in shaping Bollywood's dance vocabulary.

As Bollywood grew, it began to incorporate Western dance styles, particularly during the "Golden Era" of the 1950s and 1960s, when jazz and rock and roll began to influence choreography. The 1970s and 1980s saw the rise of disco and funk, with films like "Disco Dancer" epitomizing this fusion. This era also marked the beginning of Bollywood's engagement with hip-hop and other contemporary styles, influenced by global pop culture icons such as Michael Jackson.

The advent of globalization and cultural exchange further enriched Bollywood dance, blending Latin, Arabic, and hip-hop elements into its choreography.
Dance reality shows and social media platforms have democratized dance, allowing new styles and choreographers to emerge and gain popularity. Today, Bollywood dance is a vibrant fusion of classical, folk, and contemporary styles, reflecting India's rich cultural tapestry and its openness to global influences.
